DAVID RITCHIE / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER INJURED OFFICER: An OPP officer was injured when a van was knocked by a tractor-trailer into her parked cruiser where it was stopped on the shoulder of the QEW early Thursday morning. OPP officer suffers minor injuries in collision An OPP officer received minor injuries yesterday morning when her cruiser was struck by a van on the QEW. The lead up to the incident began shortly after midnight when several OPP officers assembled in the area of the QEW and Ford Drive where they had received reports of heavy traffic congestion. The heavy traffic was due to a double lane closure at Trafalgar Road for construction. One of the responding officers parked her cruiser on the north shoulder of the QEW, just past the Ford Drive off ramp, where she activated her emergency lights to warn motorists of the congestion ahead and to prevent motorists from backing up to the Ford Drive ramp. At around 12:30 a.m. a tractor-trailer struck a van, which in turn was driven onto the shoulder by the impact where it hit the officer's cruiser. The officer was taken to hospital, but later released. The drivers of the van and tractor-trailer were not injured. The driver of the tractor-trailer has been charged with careless driving. Police are reminding motorists to be alert as during the summer months as numerous lane reductions frequently occur on provincial highways due to construction. A double lane closure on the QEW at Trafalgar Road is scheduled for tonight.
