The angle of departure at the rear is 24.5 degrees, and coupled with a ground clearance of 203 mm, we did not get hung up on the rear either. Standard now across the board is Hill Start Assist. When you come to a full stop on a sharp hill and lift off the brakes to move ahead, the brakes stay on for two seconds until the car starts to move ahead so you don't slide backward. All 2009 Pilots are powered by a 3.5-litre variable value timing V6 with 250 hp and 253 lb/ft of torque. All Pilots, except for the 2WD model, come with a five-speed automatic transmission with grade logic built in. The 2WD has a five-speed manual transmission. There are four trim levels, LX 2WD ($36,8200) and LX 4WD ($39,820), EX ($42,220), EX-L ($44,520) and, new for 2009, the Touring ($49,920). Vehicle Stability Assist with traction control and ABD are standard as is a flip-up tailgate glass, integrated tow hitch (seven-pin on the Touring, four-pin on the rest) and humidity control as part of the standard air conditioning system. If you have ever struggled with the windows fogging up like we do in eastern Canada, you'll find humidity control a blessing. The unibody platform uses 52 per cent more highstrength steel than the 2008 and is part of what Honda calls its Advance Compatibility Engineering (ACE) system. Not only does it cope with collisions better by absorbing energy and spreading it across the entire body structure, it is also rock hard which has the benefit of more stabile ride and handling. Suspension is a MacStrut/multi-link system at the front and a multi-link/trailing arm system at the rear. Braking is by discs at all four corners with ABS linked to electronic brake distribution and brake assist. The longer wheelbase means a less choppy ride on broken and rutted pavement, which Quebec has, in abundance. Ride is also improved by an exceptionally wide track front and rear. On the main highways, the Touring model I drove was very smooth but on the back roads the stiffness of the chassis and robust suspension took potholes roughly, which you would expect. With Pilot's cylinder deactivation, you know you're running on just three cylinders when the green "Eco" light turns on. We found the Pilot would cruise all day at 100 km/h on three. But trying to keep up with the Quebec flow of traffic that averages about 130 km/h on Highway 15, the Eco light would go out at about 120 km/h. So here's another reason to drive sanely it costs less at the pump. Styling is also much changed for 2009. Research with previous owners revealed they wanted a more rugged look in the next generation. Reportedly, Honda stylists focused on the hard lines of the industrial laptops you see on construction sites for inspiration. The result is more purposeful looking Pilot. The interior is totally changed with the emphasis on more room in the middle and third rows. Another focus group finding was owners wanted enough cargo space for a stroller without having to fold the third row seat and that need was addressed in the overall interior design that now boasts 589 litres of volume behind the third row split/fold seats. The centre console storage bin is now 15 litres in volume compared to 10 litres in the 2008. Honda has a knack of anticipating the consumer wants/needs curve with models perfect for the time, a great example being the current Civic. With the 2009 Pilot, Honda looks to have seen the shift in SUV/CUV rationalization coming and is ready for it.
