Labbett has been a key figure in the development of the Oakville Sports Hall of Fame. He sold tickets, attended meetings, reviewed nominations, secured silent auction prizes, and assumed the role of chair. He was able to secure a permanent home for the Oakville Sports Hall of Fame at Oakville Place Mall. "Through his actions he has inspired others to believe in this project (Oakville Sports Hall of Fame) including athletes, volunteers and politicians," said Mei. Youth Award Lynn Bedard won the Youth Award. "Lynn Bedard believes in youth and the environment. She has gone beyond just believing in these causes. She has put these beliefs into action," Mei said. Bedard is a youth representative at the Oakville Youth development centre. She works as a liaison between youth and staff to ensure that the voices of youth are heard. She is also a member of the Youth Police Advisory Committee, which focuses on youth street crime and its solutions from a youth perspective. The Gary Allan High School student is helping W.H Morden Public School achieve Eco-School status through her volunteer initiatives with its `Green Team.' Individual Volunteer Award Susan Curran's desire to help others achieve a better quality of life was recognized this Wednesday. She won the Individual Volunteer Award. "As a physician she was concerned with the quality of care of terminally ill patients at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and was instrumental in developing the palliative care unit there," explained Mei. Curran volunteers with Big Sisters as a one-on-one tutor, Amnesty International, Oakvillegreen Conservation Association and belongs to the Church of the Incarnation. She was an influential player behind the development of Oakville's first Organic Farmers Market and the Oakvillegreen's Community Garden. "She is a soft-spoken person whose kind heart touches everyone." concluded Mei. International Award Sandra Onufryk secured funding for the development of a children's library, an adult library and a community centre in one of India's poverty struck communities. She won the International Award. "Securing the building for the adult library included negotiating with a local king," explained Mei. "Sandra's work went beyond literacy as she was able to secure funding for an eye surgeon to bring free cataract surgery to over 100 improvised adults. As a result, these 100 people got their eyesight back and were able to earn an income," added Mei. Heritage and History Award Harry Barrett, a lifelong Oakville resident, World War II veteran, businessman, entrepreneur, former mayor, wont the Heritage and History Award. Barrett has been an active figure in the Oakville Historical Society for more than 40 years. Through his leadership, the Erchless Estate was saved from developers. Thanks to his efforts the Oakville waterfront remains a natural public space, noted Mei. "A meeting with Harry will be undoubtedly accompanied by a story of places, people and events to bring the past to life and to engage his listeners...Harry Barrett truly embodies the spirit of Oakville -- the past, the present and the future," said Mei.
