The YMCA of Oakville offers three special camps where new skills and new experiences are key -- Wilderness Camp, Aquatics W Camp and Camp Trailblazer. Wilderness camp is a `tripping' camp program that challenges youth to live and learn in the great outdoors and to explore our natural world. Trips go to several natural, beautiful areas of Ontario such as Kawartha Lakes and Georgian Bay Islands. Youth and teens who want to earn their aquatic leadership certifications this summer can attend Aquatics camps at the Y's Peter Gilgan Family Y facility -- a topnotch aquatics centre with two pools in the heart of Oakville. All levels of Lifesaving Society certifications for swim skills and first aid are offered, from Bronze Star/Basic First Aid through to National Lifeguard Service (NLS) and Swim Instructor certifications. Camp Trailblazer is the Y's camp run out of Valens Conservation Area -- a camp that provides a "back woods" experience while still remaining a day camp for juniors (6-8 years old) and allowing seniors (9-12 years old) to camp overnight once a week. Trailblazer participants will enjoy canoeing, hiking, and swimming in a quiet and diverse park. New programs include recreational fishing, environmental awareness and orienteering challenges where campers will learn the basics of using a compass and progress to using a handheld GPS unit.
