Arts festival coming next week The For the Love of the Arts Festival runs June 14 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at White Oaks Secondary School, south campus, 1330 Montclair Dr. The event is one of the major fundraisers for CommUnity Arts Space, a local organization consisting of a contingent of various groups who are raising funds for a new multipurpose arts facility in Oakville. The festival will feature a number of attractions, such as live entertainment by local dance and music groups, workshops, interactive displays, craft-making activities, as well as an art show and sale. A new addition this year is the CUAS Battle of the Bands, which includes live music in an outdoor beer garden setting featuring local groups from a variety of genres and age groups. The competition starts at 1:45 p.m. Go online to www.myspace.com/dimlightsband and www.myspace.com/thegullsband to hear musical samples. Visual artists are also welcome to display their work at the festival. An award will be given to the best artist, which includes the chance to show their work at the new gallery in downtown Oakville called the Towne Square Gallery. Admission costs $10 for adults, $5 for students and children under 12 get in for free. Vendors and volunteers, including both adults and students, are still needed. The event runs rain or shine. Movies in the Park The second annual Movies in the Park fundraiser is being held on June 14 to raise money to support the maternal child unit at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Join your family, friends and neighbours at Nottinghill Park in Glen Abbey to w a t c h Dreamworks' The Bee Movie under the moon and stars. Donations will be accepted at each entrance point and 100 per cent of the proceeds from this event will go to the maternal child unit. Organizers say they are hoping the event attracts more than 200 families. The evening kicks off at 7:45 p.m. with concessions, entertainment, raffles, demonstrations by the Oakville Fire Department, the Boston Pizza Fun Team, Miss Ontario, and many other activities. Fairies at Sovereign House Oakville artist Frances Tyrrell presents a show called Midsummer Magic 2008, an exhibition of fairy paintings and prints, at Sovereign House, 7 West River St. The show runs June 21, 22, 25, 28, 29 and July 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. Fairy refreshments will be served June 22 and 29 from 1 to 4 p.m. Children and fairies are welcome.
