www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 6, 2008 - 27 Heel 'n Wheel event raising funds for accessible dock The sixth annual Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion fundraiser this Sunday, June 8 will help raise funds to build an accessible dock on Sixteen-Mile Creek. Participants at this year's sixth annual event, presented by Scotiabank, will be supporting the development of Oakville's first accessible boating dock facility and individuals with spinal cord injury (SPI). The planned dock on Sixteen-Mile Creek will allow people with spinal cord injuries and other disabilities, as well as children and seniors, to participate in boating activities from Oakville's Harbour. "An accessible dock will benefit all of the people in our community," said Stephen Cull, Oakville's Wheels In Motion event leader. "This project will transform the urban wasteland area under the Rebecca Street Bridge into a waterfront dock and park that welcomes people of all ages and abilities. Nothing like this has ever been built in Canada," said Cull. Rick Hansen Wheels In Motion is an annual event held in communities across Canada. Each June, thousands of people wheel, walk or run to raise funds to improve the quality of life of people with spinal cord injury and for research leading to a cure. This year marks the 21st anniversary of the of the Man In Motion World Tour -- and more than 21 years of dreams in motion. Twenty years ago, Rick Hansen wheeled around the world, fuelled by the dream of a fully accessible and inclusive society, and a cure for spinal cord injury. His legendary Man In Motion World Tour spanned more than 40,000 km through 34 countries, took more than two years to complete and raised $26 million for spinal cord injury. Local residents can participate in the event Sunday at the Burloak Canoe Club. Registration is at 9 a.m. The event is for the entire family with free face painting, food and services like onsite chair massages. In addition to the Wheelchair Relay at 10:15 a.m., there's also a silent auction. All details are available at www.oakvillewheels.ca. Whole Foods on Cornwall Road, which has made Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion its June charity, will contribute all money being raised in its One Dime at a Time campaign towards the accessible docking project.
