www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday May 31, 2008 - 7 Charges dropped against councillor in exchange for six-month peace bond By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Two assault charges laid against Ward 6 Town Councillor Max Khan nearly a year ago in what police originally called a landlord/tenant dispute were withdrawn in Oakville Provincial Court April 11 in exchange for a six-month peace bond. "The charges were withdrawn on my promise to stay away from the guy," Khan said in an interview Friday. The councillor has agreed to steer clear of the other man in the dispute, who Khan said was not a tenant, but was living in the man's girlfriend's rented apartment. Max Khan The councillor said it shouldn't be hard to meet the terms of the peace bond since the two operate in different circles. Halton Regional Police confirmed Khan was given a sixmonth peace bond. It means the councillor must keep the peace and be of good behaviour for six months in relation to the alleged victim, said police. "It is more of a resolution to the incident. The assault charge will stay on his record, but a conviction will not be registered, if he abides by the peace bond for the required time, similar to a charge being stayed because the courts took too long to hear the matter. The charge on his record could be taken off if he went through the pardon process," explained Sgt. FURNITURE CUSTOMER APPRECIATION SALE 15-25%* OFF DURING JUNE!
