Miana Griffiths and Michael Rose will be looking to upgrade their silver medals from last year. And Daniel Mathie and Jordan Doherty will be chasing down their first medals. All five won their events Thursday at the South Region Track and Field Meet in Hamilton and will advance to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) meet next week. Hennessy, an OFSAA gold medalist in cross country in the fall, won the junior girls' 1500m in a time of four minutes, 54.56 seconds. Deanna Brasz of Jordan Station provided the only serious threat, finishing 0.77 seconds behind. The rest of the field was almost four seconds back. The St. Thomas Aquinas student finished ninth at last year's OFSAA meet but has dropped three seconds off her time from the 2007 regional meet. Hennessy's teammate, Miana Griffiths, won the senior girls' 100m title in a time of 11.94 seconds. That's just slightly off her OFSAA silver medal-winning time of 11.87 from a year ago. Griffiths posted the best time in qualifying and cemented her number one standing in the region with a convincing victory in the final. She was the only runner to break the 12second barrier as Shennae Steele of Brampton was runner-up in 12.33 seconds. Michael Rose ran the lead leg on Abbey Park's 4x400 OFSAA silvermedal relay team. And he was at the front again on Thursday, winning the senior boys' 400m in 49.22 seconds. Rose's teammate, Michael Trnkus - an OFSAA bronze medalist in the junior boys' 400m last year -- finished seventh and didn't qualify. But those two will be a part of Abbey Park's relay team that was looking to qualify on the second day of the meet, Friday. (Results were not available at press time). Daniel Mathie of Abbey Park chopped more than 10 seconds off his winning time from the previous week's Halton meet to take the midget boys' 1500m. He posted a winning time of 4:19.37 to beat Dundas' Taylor Forbes (4:20.71). Blakelock's Jordan Doherty also showed a marked improvement from his time at Haltons, winning the ambulatory boys' 100m in 15.63 seconds. He ran a 16.21 the week before. Several competitors will be making return trips to OFSAA, but in different events. Kings Christian Collegiate's Chantelle Robbertse, a sixth-place finisher in the midget girls' high jump last year, she'll be competing in the 400m this time after finishing second on Thursday. Loyola's Paulina Maher was seventh in the junior girls' 3000m a year ago but will be racing in the senior girls' 1500m steeplechase next week. And Abbey Park's Sam McVean, who competed in midget girls' shot put last year, will be going back in junior girls' discus. Other OFSAA qualifiers from the first day included Loyola's Alicia Knox and Blakelock's Jess Gallaher in the senior girls' 1500m and Blakelock's Judith Inoue in the ambulatory girls' 100m. Bulldogs hand Buzz second straight loss The Halton Hills Bulldogs scored four times in the second period on their way to a 9-6 win over the Oakville Buzz in Georgetown Thursday. The Buzz took a 2-1 lead after the opening period of the Jr. B lacrosse game thanks to a pair of goals by Braden Gallant. Halton Hills dominated the second, though, and added another goal in the opening minute of the third to build a 6-2 advantage. Alex Kruse, Robert Bentivegna, Harry Hristopoulos and Josh Ruys scored third-period goals but Oakville never got closer than three goals. The Buzz, now 7-3, were shut out in the second period of their previous game, an 8-5 loss to Mimico.
