14 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday May 31, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Plan ahead when taking Fido on vacation with you ou are planning your summer vacation, but can't bear to leave your pet behind. Going on the road or flying can be a stressful concept when your four-legged Y friend is joining you. To make sure your voyage with your pet is a good one, plan ahead. Before traveling with your pet make sure you visit the veterinarian. Safeguard your pet's health by ensuring vaccinations are up to date and he has all the medications he needs. Be sure to ask your veterinarian about parasites or other health risks native to your destination. Imagine losing your animal close to your home. Now imagine losing your animal in a place you are not familiar with. Dogs are required by law in Oakville to wear a dog licence tag. That tag keeps your pet connected to you and your home through records retained at the Oakville and District Humane Society. The tag becomes equally as effective for returning your pet to you if your animal gets lost while on vacation. Make sure you call the shelter and provide them with your contact information while away. Microchips are also useful tools for tracking down lost pets. Keep your pet's collar and dog licence tag on at all times. Adding an identification tag indicating the animal's name, address or phone number can also expedite reconnecting should your animal get lost. A cell phone and destination information can be useful information on a tag. Cats are not licensed in Oakville, but they are required by law to wear identification. Cat tags may be purchased at the Oakville and District Humane Society, where the cat's information is retained. Now that you've taken care of the medical and identification needs of your traveling pet, don't forget to add water to your list. Always bring plenty of plastic jugs filled with bottled or tap water from home. Different drinking water could upset your animal's stomach. If flying, freeze water in a bowl the night before. It won't spill when loading the airplane and will melt in time for your pet to enjoy it. Also ensure that your shipping crate is approved by the airline and is large enough. Pets should be able to stand, sit and turn around. Write "Live Animal" in large letters on at least two sides of the crate and draw arrows indicating the crate's upright position. Some airlines will allow small animals to fly with you in the cabin, but do not assume this is permitted with all airlines. Call ahead. If you are traveling by road, never leave your animal in a parked car. On a hot day a stationary vehicle can become prohibitively hot and cause heatstroke. Pets left alone could also be stolen.
