www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday May 31, 2008 - 11 STUDENT EXCELLENCE 2008 Halton District School Board honours Oakville students On May 1, the Halton District School Board held its 24th annual Celebration of Student Excellence, a special evening that recognized one student from each of the board's schools. The honoured students are representative of exceptional qualities in at least two of the following areas: academic, vocational and athletic fields, self-improvement, community work, citizenship and leadership, or other specific criteria that reflects the school's unique priorities. Among the 93 students honoured were 32 from Oakville. This page represents the final group of Oakville students honoured. · Spencer Arbuthnot, Grade 6, Sunningdale: Spencer is an outstanding student, who also shows his natural leadership in the many school activities in which he participates, including intramural teams, choir and the Student Leadership Club. Spencer is a positive contributor to the school culture and a caring and respectful member of the Sunningdale community. · Emily Farquharson, Grade 8, W.H. Morden: Along with excellent academics Emily was a member of the cross country and volleyball teams. Emily plays in the Concert Band and Jazz Band as well as helping out with the junior choir. Emily participates in the Red Maple Reading Club and is a member of the Battle of the Books team. Emily demonstrates excellent citizenship through her involvement as a library helper, Student Council member and ECO Club member. · Sean Cousins, Grade 8, West Oak: Sean demonstrates on a daily basis that he is committed to academic excellence, dedicated to contributing to the school community in as many ways as possible, and respectful of his peers and teachers. Over the past few years, his involvement in school activities has included the Athletic Council, the cross-country team, the concert band and wind ensemble, robotics, think bowl, the senior volleyball team, and a leadership/ anti-bullying team. · Jessica Tat, Grade 11, Abbey Park: Jessica Tat is a top academic student and an artist. She is a member of the senior girls basketball team and the badminton team. She has attended OFSSA as a track and field athlete and wrestler. · Stephen Soock, Grade 12, Iroquois Ridge: Stephen is a remarkable learner-leader and lives the school goal of community involvement. Stephen is an active member of the Staff/Student Learning Team, the President of the Interact Club, Chair of the Gay/Straight Alliance, and the lead mentor for the Grade 10 Synergy program. In his spare time, he cochairs Oakville's Million or More Campaign to support The Stephen Lewis' Foundation HIV/AIDS project in South Africa. · Stephanie Fox, Grade 12, Oakville Trafalgar: Stephanie is Spencer Arbuthnot Grade 6, Sunningdale Emily Farquharson, Grade 8, W. Blakelock Valerie Marshall, Grade 12, White Oaks an excellent student who has made a significant contribution to cocurricular life in a variety of activities. She has been a member of Student Council throughout high school and has provided leadership on the Oakville Trafalgar Ski team. This year, she is also the student representative on school council. The highlight of Stephanie's leadership experiences was her cochairing of the OT Relay for Life Cancer fundraiser in May 2007. This highly successful event resulted in OT students and staff raising more than $93,000 for cancer research. · Kayla Beck, Grade 12 T.A. Blakelock: Since Grade 9, Kayla has proven to be a mature and compassionate student with a strong work ethic. Kayla is a wellrounded student, maintaining exemplary attendance and excellent grades, while balancing a busy schedule with many commit- ments. In addition to her academic achievements, Kayla has become a tremendous asset to the drama program, has worked in the centre, and has been successful a peer tutor. Kayla has a positive attitude and disposition, never complains and rises above any challenge. She is a strong role model and true student of excellence. · Valerie Marshall, Grade 12, White Oaks: Valerie is an excellent academic student who has maintained an average over 90 per cent each year. She has been a member of the Cat Crew, as well as hockey, field hockey, rugby and the drama club. Valerie has mentored students interested in the Shad Valley program. Outside of school, she volunteers once a week working with therapists and observing speech therapy. She enjoys playing hockey with the Town of Oakville, as well as refereeing.
