30 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 28, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Kia bares its Soul, production car keeps original concept name Kia Motors has confirmed its all-new segment-busting car will retain the name and spirit of the concept from which it evolved, Soul. First seen as the SOUL concept car at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, a trio of concept developments then appeared at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show which gave a strong indication to the many characters the new Kia could take on. The three Geneva concept cars (SOUL Burner, SOUL Diva and SOUL Searcher) were created by Kia's European design team led by Gregory Guillaume with input from Kia's Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer. Kia's Californian and Korean design studios designed the original SOUL concept jointly. Speaking about the choice of name for the original 2006 Detroit concept car, Tom Kearns, Chief Designer of Kia Motors America, said, "We wanted to inject some life into this car's design, to give it a soul. "And the word Soul is a homophone for the home city of Kia Motors headquarters, in Korea, so it is a fun play on words." The Kia Soul defies classification and its design will encourage customers to build an emotional bond with this new car. Production of Soul will begin in Korea in September. Kia believes Soul will provide a creative platform for buyers to individualize and match their car to their own personality. The Kia Soul production car will make its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in October. Drive in style this summer with Mercedes-Benz. Powered by a 260 hp turbocharged and intercooled 2.0L Ecotec engine, the Cobalt SS coupe was designed to deliver a balance of track-proven performance capability, driving refinement and premium features. Offered exclusively with a five-speed manual transmission, it is also an efficient performer, delivering an estimated 6.6 L/100km in highway driving the best among top competitors. That combination of performance, efficiency and features comes with an MSRP of $24,995 and arrives at Chevrolet dealers next month. The Cobalt SS comes well-equipped at that price, including standard air conditioning, side-impact air bags, Pioneer premium sound system, remote keyless entry, StabiliTrak electronic stability control system, and OnStar. SS-specific features include distinctive exterior and interior treatments such as new front upper and lower grilles with diamond-mesh appearance, rockers, body side badging, bright tip exhaust outlet, SS-embroidered sport seats with suede-like Ultralux inserts, a specific gauge cluster, A-pillarmounted turbo boost gauge and specific shifter arrangement. Popular options include a sunroof ($1,100), high-wing rear spoiler ($275) and a limited-slip differential ($645). The Cobalt SS delivers a quick 0-100km time of approximately 5.7 seconds thanks to the engine's "no-lift shift" calibration and an impressive maximum lateral grip of 0.9 g. This combination enabled the Cobalt SS to set a new class record when running Germany's famed Nürburgring racing circuit, posting a time of 8:22.85 minutes. Ride and handing are supported by an all-new FE5 Sport suspension, with specific stabilizer bars, spring rates and damper tuning all designed to complement the high-output turbocharged powertrain. Driver-selectable modes help maximize performance whether on the street or track. Four-wheel disc brakes from Brembo have a performanceoriented, fixed-caliper design, which resists fade better than floating caliper designs; the rear discs are vented for better heat dissipation. Large, twin-five-spoke 18-inch forged aluminum wheels and performance tires are standard.
