www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 28, 2008 - 27 Happy and heartbreaking moments mark the past Continued from page 26 He's interviewed crooner Al Martino several times but one date was particularly memorable, Oct. 4, 2006, 35 years to the day Morden first interviewed him. "Al's birthday was coming up and the AM 740 staff surprised Al by singing Happy Birthday and brought him a cake from the Oakville Italian Bakery." But, along with the happy came the sad and poignant. "I got an e-mail from a 12-yearold boy whose grandmother had just passed away and was getting buried at the end of the week," Morden told Studio B, a weekly Internet broadcast hosted by computer and radio buff Craig Smith and Toronto broadcaster Don Andrews who has also worked at AM 740. "He asked, `Can you dedicate an hour of your program to my grandmother because we're going to have the service in the morning and then go to the reception from 1 to 2 p.m., so can you dedicate that hour because you are what my grandmother was, we associate her with you.'" Morden readily agreed, deeply touched by the e-mail this 12-yearold had sent on behalf of his grandmother. "At the end of the program I read the letter the boy wrote," Morden said. "As a result I got phone calls from mostly women and most of them were crying. It stops you in your tracks." Morden has never met this 12year-old or any member of that family. A REALLY BIG SHOW: Barry Morden, right, interviewed Ed Sullivan at the Riviera Hotel in Los Vegas in 1970. He says it was one of the highlights of his career in radio.
