www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 21, 2008 - 19 Searching for a cause and a cure while coping with schizophrenia Continued from page 14 diagnose and treat it, often greatly interferes with, or eliminates, a young person's development -- through education, employment and relationships. Schizophrenia is treatable; however, because it varies in severity, the intensity of treatment varies. Some people require hospitalization -- some for longer than others -- and others are treated in the community. The foundation of all treatment is antipsychotic medications, called neuroleptics, which help manage symptoms. Pearce described them as the means for patients to control their symptoms. Once symptoms are controlled, then therapy, such as psychotherapy or cognitive behavioural therapy, help the person understand the illness and cope with it. Pearce admitted many people with schizophrenia have brushes with suicide attempts. However, he notes that it is selfharm, rather than violence toward others and that's typical of the person with schizophrenia although that is not always the popular portrayal of the disease. It is Pearce's wish people not be afraid of schizophrenia. He said people aren't offended or afraid of someone they meet who has a broken arm or cancer. Schizophrenia is a disease. Cowley said people who have cancer aren't called cancerics, noting the term "schizophrenics" is an offensive label. It comes from movies about those with split personalities and other inaccurate understanding of the disease and a fear about the misunderstood or unknown. It isn't known what causes schizophrenia. "There is no cure, only treatment that can stabilize people to their own safety, but not to a high quality of life," said Pearce. On Sunday, May 25, the SSO's Halton and Peel Chapter will hold its annual Walk of Hope at Coronation Park. Mayor Rob Burton has proclaimed the day Hope for Schizophrenia Day. It was awareness Jefferies, who founded the SSO in Oakville, set out to achieve. After a 30-year teaching career, he hoped to change the world's awareness of the illness, and started by placing a small ad in an Oakville newspaper asking families of people with schizophrenia to attend a meeting to "share and educate." About 80 people attended the meeting in a local church basement. At that time, families were often blamed for the illness of their family member. Oakville became the first chapter of what has grown to be the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario, the Schizophrenia Society of Canada and the World Fellowship for Schizophrenia and Allied Disorders. When Jefferies died in 2002 at age 86, he left a legacy of support for the families of people with schizophrenia. Registration on May 25 begins at 12:30 p.m. For information, call 905-338-2112.
