The Town of Oakville's first aerial spraying to combat a gypsy moth infestation within 63 hectares of Town forest properties may happen as early as the middle of next week, according to a release issued Friday by the Town. Subject to weather conditions, the Gypsy Moth Project will involve two early morning aerial sprayings, one week apart. The spray will be the biological control treatment Btk (Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies kurstaki) and will be sprayed by a low flying helicopter. "In an effort to control gypsy moth, the Town has received the support for the use of Btk from the appropriate public health departments and the Ministry of Environment," said Chris Mark, director of parks and open space. "We are ensured that Btk is both safe for our environment and our residents," said Mark. The aerial spraying of Btk is permitted under the Town's Pesticide Bylaw. Btk, a bacterium found naturally in soils, has been safely used as a biological pest control agent for more than 30 years with no public health problems identified. Btk is also used on organicallygrown produce. According to Town forestry staff, the gypsy moth larvae have just hatched and are beginning to feed voraciously on the leaves of mature trees causing serious tree defoliation. "Without any action, the levels of gypsy moth infestation we are seeing in the high risk areas can devastate the tree canopy," said John McNeil, manager of forestry and cemetery services. "Thousands of trees, primarily oaks may die if we do not protect them," said McNeil. The areas that will be sprayed include: · North Park, · Trafalgar Lawn Cemetery, · Sixteen-Mile Creek north of Upper Middle Road · Winston Woods Park During the spray, the Town will be implementing a traffic plan that requires temporary road and trail closures. The closures are necessary to minimize risks to residents as a result of the low flying helicopter. Road closures are expected to last less than 30 minutes, between 5 and 8 a.m. All emergency services will have full access to all properties within the spray zones at all times. Since the aerial spraying is dependent on favourable weather conditions, the most up-to-date information on the spray dates will be will be available online at www.oakville.ca.
