Gearing up for its seventh year in Oakville, the 2008 event is looking to be one of the biggest to date. Relay For Life is an overnight, non-competitive relay that sees participants walk, run or stroll around the track at Appleby College from 7 p.m. on Friday, June 6 to 7 a.m. on Saturday, June 7. It is the signature fundraising event for the Canadian Cancer Society, Oakville Unit, and last year raised more than $533,000 for cancer research and support services in our community in just 12 hours. Want to become involved in a great community event and be part of a major fund raising event for the Canadian Cancer Society? There's still time to regisWhile other teams, like 2007's Elvis Lives, did an off-the-wall, Elvis theme where all 10 team members dressed up like Elvis all through the years. Be creative and have fun. Prizes are awarded for the most creative teams. As a participant in Relay For Life, each team is encouraged to raise a minimum of $100 per person or $1,000 per team. Participants are given tips and tools by the Canadian Cancer Society to help ensure they meet their fundraising goals. In recent years, many participants have enjoyed the online fundraising capabilities. With a few simple "clicks" participants can reach family and friends worldwide, plus they have the chance to create their own personalized web page with stories, photos and most importantly the reasons why they Relay. For those teams that enjoy a challenge, the Relay For Life volunteer steering committee will once again be issuing challenges to participating teams. The 2008 teams will once again be encouraged to shoot for Dream Team status by raising a minimum of $300 per team member, a minimum of $3,000 per team and selling a minimum of three luminaries per team member by Thursday, May 29. Any team that can accomplish this will be deemed a Dream Team and will be given special team recognition on event night. In 2007, 16 Relay For Life teams qualified as Dream Teams. Teams will also have the chance to battle it out for the chance to "chill" at Relay For Life with Radio Media Sponsor, Wave 94.7 FM. The station will once again be presenting its Late Night Chillin' With the Wave patio. The top three fundraising teams as of Wednesday, May 28 will have the chance to join them for some gourmet treats and incredible live music at Relay. The top three fundraising teams will be announced during the Relay For Life opening ceremonies on Friday, June 6, 2008. A fundraising team consists of 10 participants and one team captain.
