20 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 16, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com 3 on 3 community cup for Big Brothers Upper Oakville Shopping Centre will hold its first Community Cup Basketball Tournament on Sunday, May 25. The mall, which has been part of the Oakville landscape since 1986, is introducing its own community event, a 3 on 3 basketball tournament. Christened "the Jim Horgan Community Cup" by organizer Ken Stockstill, the tournament will honour Horgan, a very special friend, and tireless fundraiser and supporter of the shopping centre. The tournament will welcome teams in four divisions: 12 and under, 13 15 year olds, 16 18 year olds, and an open division for adults or mixed groups. Each division is limited to 12 teams totaling 48 teams in total. Courts will be set up in the Upper Oakville Shopping Centre parking lot, and each team entered is guaranteed at least three games. "The tournament is open to all that enjoy the game of basketball. The 3 on 3 format is very popular in many neighbourhoods in the United States, and we think that this format will work well here. Teams will be made up of five members allowing teams to sub players when necessary. We really hope groups of friends, coworkers or neighbours will join together, form a team, have a really great time, and help an important cause," said Stockstill. Upper Oakville Shopping Centre will direct all proceeds from the event to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton. "We think a basketball tournament is a great way to engage the community, but it was important to do more, that a true Community Cup should give back to those less fortunate in our local community. We could think of no better group than Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton. We were already familiar with them as we support one of their after school club tutoring programs at Sheridan Public School," said Stockstill.
