Bank Bed Challenge raises $111,391 Representatives from Oakville's six major banks raced decorated hospital beds along downtown Lakeshore Road towards a record-breaking $111,391 finish line at the 2008 Bank Bed Challenge on Sunday. The competitive business rivals competed goodnaturedly to raise money to buy hospital beds for Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). "Together they surpassed last year's total by 20 per cent, making 2008 the most successful bank bed challenge ever," said Mike Bartlett, director of community giving for the Oakville Hospital Foundation (OHF). The races culminated four weeks of fundraising known as the Bank Bed Challenge that involved more than 40 branches from the six major banks (BMO Bank of Montreal, CIBC, HSBC, Royal Bank, Scotiabank and TD Canada Trust). "Government funding alone cannot sustain our hospital," said Allen Wightman, Executive Director and Vice President of Development at OHF. "The tremendous efforts of our banking partners and the community help bridge the gap to purchase the vital medical equipment that Oakville residents expect and deserve." Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn got things underway when the bank managers pushed him to the finish line. Awards were presented for: Best Decorated Bed (Team BMO); Best Team Cheer (Team CIBC for the second year in a row); Most Sportsmanlike (Team RBC) and the Fastest Bed (Team TD Canada Trust). "Team TD Canada Trust is thrilled to accept the award for the fastest bed," said TD Canada Trust Branch Manager Connie Johnson. "I'm proud of our team for accomplishing our goal, I'm also proud of the care and compassion shown by all the race teams following an injury to one of our racers. Thanks to the quick response of the EMS team and the caring staff at OTMH, he is in good spirits and recovering at home." St. John's Ambulance paramedics administered aid to the injured racer before he was taken to OTMH for treatment and release. Team HSBC was recognized as the Top Per Capita Fundraiser, contributing $21,000 to the campaign despite having only one branch located in Oakville. The final award was given to Team Scotia as the top overall fundraiser. This marks the third consecutive year Scotiabank has won this award, raising more than $35,000. The Oakville Hospital Foundation raises funds for OTMH to ensure essential healthcare services and resources are available.
