Blades head coach and general manager Carlo Coccimiglio said the team tried to enrol Greenham into full-time courses at Athabasca University this winter, hoping he could then attend AlaskaFairbanks as a transfer student and not forfeit a year of eligibility. "We had a solution for it, and the NCAA turned us down," said Coccimiglio. "As an organization, we did everything we possibly could." Oliver Wren Greenham, who posted a 27-3 record and 2.32 goals-against average in 35 regular-season games with the Blades this season, was unavailable for comment yesterday afternoon. He went 16-5, with a 2.15 goals-against average and .933 save percentage, during Oakville's run through the Provincial Junior A Hockey League playoffs, and surrendered four goals in the Blades' first two wins at the Dudley Hewitt Cup. Wren, meanwhile, has not seen any meaningful game time since earning the victory in Oakville's final regular-season game against the Mississauga Chargers. He did play three minutes in Game 4 of the Blades' league final series against Markham, but only after Oakville had built a 4-1 lead and when there was concern for Greenham's safety in the final minutes. The 20-year-old Wren, a local resident, went 11-2 with a 3.22 goals-against average in 14 games with the Blades after being acquired from the Burlington Cougars in the middle of the season. "Oliver has the experience. He has been a No. 1 goalie before. As an organization and a team, we have confidence in him," said Coccimiglio. "The kids look up to him and know he can play. They have no issues with him being in net." Coccimiglio said Wren and the rest of the Blades were aware of Greenham's situation for the past few months, and that Wren has worked hard in practice to prepare for such a scenario. The coach added there is a possibility that Greenham might be able to rejoin the Blades if they reach the RBC Royal Bank Cup, scheduled for May 3-11 in Cornwall. Coccimiglio hopes the NCAA will make an exception for a player competing for a national championship, noting there are exceptions to the eligibility rules when it involves an athlete representing his or her country.
