44 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday April 25, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Oakville Symphony seeking Young Artists Award recipients The Oakville Symphony is currently accepting applications for a Young Artist Award for the 2008 2009 season. Young Artist Awards, introduced in 1998, are scholarships available to musicians between the ages of 16 and 23 who play string instruments. The winner of this award will receive $1,500 for playing a season with the Oakville Symphony, where rehearsals on every Monday night are mandatory. The opportunity presents the musician with exposure to other talented string players under the leadership of Maestro Roberto De Clara, the symphony's musical director. The Kenneth Hollier Award is named in honour of the first musical director of the Oakville Symphony and is open to local musicians between the ages of 16 and 21 who play orchestral instruments. The competition is held in May and alternates annually between string instruments and nonstring instruments. In 2008 it will be the turn of non-string instruments. Prize for the winner is $500. Developing Artist Awards are a component of the Kenneth Hollier competition and are awarded at the judges' discretion to outstanding competitors of high school age. The accompanying prize is $200. The orchestra accepts applications for both the Young Artists Awards and the Kenneth Hollier Awards during April. Auditions are held in mid to late May. The Youssef-Warren Foundation Violin was donated by the foundation, assisted through generous pricing by Geo. Heinl & Sons, and is made available to a deserving young member of the orchestra, to play while they remain a member of the orchestra. Recipients are identified by the chair of the Scholarships and Awards Program and require the concurrence of George Youssef. The president of the orchestra acts as the referee -- if required. Applications should state name, age, address, email, phone number, which instrument, how long studying music; RCM grade, if any. They should be sent to the Oakville Symphony office at Oakville.symphony@cogeco.ca or to Martin Levman at Box 312, Campbellville, ON, L0P 1B0 or mlevman@sympatico.ca. Additional information regarding these awards can be obtained by contacting Martin Levman at the address above or 905-8541769. Auditions will be held at a mutually convenient time.
