www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 23, 2008 - 7 Why did police raid home? Re: Resident shaken by police raid, Oakville Beaver, April 16. The reticence of the police regarding the search warrant suggests they are too embarrassed to reveal what led to the warrant. Are we getting dangerously close to the point where the police can raid your house just because they don't like the way it looks? More to the point, perhaps, is why raid the house at all? If the police genuinely believe there is a marijuana grow-op in the house, why don't they just call the resident on the telephone, explain that the house is surrounded, and invite a peaceful surrender? After all, if there really is a commercially viable grow-op present, there is no way the evidence can be destroyed in a few hours, much less a few minutes. So what is the purpose of conducting a violent break in with weapons of mass destruction, potentially endangering the lives of police officers as well as residents (and their pets)? One can only speculate -- perhaps the police are heavily invested in creating the impression that anyone who engages in unauthorized gardening is a 'dangerous' person in the belief that doing so will help to stem the tide of waning public support for marijuana prohibition. GEORGE KOSINSKI Price Break Event. SPECIAL SAVINGS - CANADIAN DOLLAR ON PAR SALE No need to rush into election Continued from page 6 government's commitment to their social welfare falls far short of the promises made when the country was invaded. Much of the growth in education and employment opportunities have come from the Canadian private sector, through the many NGOs who have made it their mission to help the women and children who have suffered for so long. The Conservative government's call for a longer military offensive campaign will not offer security or stability, and it will continue to divert funding necessary for infrastructure and social progress. As a parent of a university student, the better student loan program is debatable at best, and by the time my two high school-aged children are ready to go, I speak for many who will not be able to accumulate the savings to fully utilize the new allowable RRSP deductions, let alone having money left over for a Tax-Free Savings Account. Nor will my children if the government keeps working its tax breaks to benefit the rich, versus the middle class or poor in this country. As a voter, it is not in the best interest of Canadians to rush into an election when the polls show that the electorate are not clearly satisfied with the party in power. The current minority government has effected many policies that were proposed by the Liberals such as hiring more police and promoting the importance of Ford within the Oakville community. Elections cost millions of dollars and it is fiscally prudent to listen to the voting public. BETH ROBERTSON 20-60% Off FLOOR CLEARANCE See Elizabeth Interiors for details.
