www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday April 18, 2008 - 43 Offensive woes sting Hornets at OWHA atom tournament The Oakville BMO Financial Group atom B Hornets could not have been much better defensively at the recent Ontario Women's Hockey Association (OWHA) championship tournament. Unfortunately, their opponents were even stingier. Oakville's offence was silenced at the championships, managing only one goal in three games. The Hornets allowed only four of their own, but finished the tournament with an 0-2-1 mark. Oakville opened the championships with a scoreless draw against Aurora, then fell 2-0 to Clearview and 2-1 to Kincardine. Clearview went on to win gold, while Kincardine claimed the silver. Such struggles were atypical of the Hornets this season. Beginning the year as a C-level squad, Oakville went 23-0-1 in league play before the OWHA ruled in December the team should be bumped to the B division. Highlights of the Hornets' season included silver-medal showings at tournaments in Clarington and Mississauga, a gold-medal win at a competition in Kingston, and a dramatic come-from-behind victory in the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League East Division final against the Clarington Flames. Goaltender Lia Widell, defencemen Rhiannon Ford and Lily Morrow, and forwards Tegan Duncan, Christina Scanlon, MacKenzie Sutherland and Alex Daniel will graduate to peewee next season, where they'll continue to be coached by Brian Morrow. The other members of this year's team -- Maddie Sisokin, Sydney Davison, Taylor Davison, Caitlin Bevington, Kai Palo, Elizabeth O'Hara, Sophie Schneider, Taylor McKibbon and Jessica Thompson -- will play their major year of atom. CONSISTENT: The Oakville minor atom A Rangers won both the Tri-County regular-season and playoff championships this year. Minor atoms win Tri-County title The Oakville minor atom A Rangers recently finished off a fine season by winning the Tri-County championship. Oakville defeated Hespeler 4-1 in the third and deciding game of the championship series at River Oaks Recreation Centre. The Rangers had won the opener, 7-2, before Hespeler rebounded to win the second game, 2-1. Oakville's other accomplishments this season include finishing first in regular-season league play as well as winning silver at tournaments in Richmond Hill, Peterborough and Rochester. "This team played incredibly well throughout the entire season," said head coach Jody Zedor. "This team was made up of seven players that had played rep hockey the year before, and 10 players that had moved up from MOHA house league the year before. Each one of these kids... played extremely hard all season long and each one of them have developed their skills as hockey players overall." Members of the team are Bradley Byers, Andrew Ciuffreda, Cale Cutcliffe, Alex Filippini, Sean Garvey, Ben Hamburg, Chris Howarth, Kyle Kolwich, Craig McCormick, Brian McGinnis, Colin McLeod, Michael Pare, Graeme Parker, Elric Schreinert, Michael Sweeney, Lucs VasilarosWilson and Jacob Zedor.
