12 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday April 18, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Earth Day clean up will spruce up 28 local sites The 17th annual Earth Day Clean Up will take place at 28 sites in Oakville on Saturday, April 19. "Have a great Earth Day by participating in the 17th annual Earth Day Clean Up on Saturday, April 19 from 9 to 11 a.m.," said Stephen Dankowich, executive director of the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights (OCCPEHR), the organizer of this event. "We are organizing this community-wide Earth Day event at 28 local nature sites because a lot of people are very concerned about the terrible amount of litter in our parks, ravines, school yards, creeks and lakefront," said Dankowich. "We want to beautify nature by cleaning it up. We also want to promote awareness and respect for local nature and waterways and we want to encourage eco activism," he remarked. Rain or shine, the 28 sites will be cleaned up. "If you would like to get your neighbourhood involved, please contact us right away to become part of the community-wide Clean Up. Parents love this positive and grassroots campaign because it allows them to work hand-in-hand with their kids on an important local project that is making a BIG difference for the earth and is helping to build up the character of young people," said Dankowich. Seventeen schools are participating in 2008. Provided for the cleanup are work gloves and bags and volunteers should bring their own rake, broom, shovel and pick-up stick. Volunteers should also bring snacks and refreshments in reusable containers.
