10 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday April 11, 2008 Church marks 175th anniversary with riverside service In April 1833, a dozen pioneer settlers met on the banks of 16 Mile Creek for a simple worship service in a small, wooden building that served as the community's meeting hall and school. This Sunday, Knox Presbyterian Church will celebrate the 175th anniversary of its first worship service with a trip back in time. At 9:30 a.m., the congregation will gather at the corner of Navy Street and Lakeshore Road, not far from where those original Presbyterians met for worship. Reverend Michael J. Marsden will lead the congregation in a brief worship ceremony. Knox Presbyterian congregation travels back in time Reverend Marsden is the 18th minister to serve the congregation in its 175-year history. Following the worship service, a procession will walk back towards Knox, which is located a few blocks east, at the corner of Lakeshore Road and Dunn Street. Those who wish can ride in historic style on a horse-drawn wagon. As the procession heads back towards Dunn Street, the church bell will ring out 175 times. In keeping with the old adage that no Presbyterian event is complete without cake, a special anniversary cake will be served following the worship service at Knox. More special, perhaps, are the individuals who will be serving the cake. The younger members of the church will serve cake alongside those whose membership in the congregation spans many decades. A fitting tribute to a church that celebrates both deep roots in the community and an exciting future. Throughout this anniversary year, Knox will continue its long tradition of community involvement with special fundraising activities. These fundraising campaigns will benefit Home Suite Hope, a local charity that offers innovative solutions towards the growing homeless crisis in Halton. Representatives from Home Suite Hope, including Wendy Perkins, Executive Director, will address the congregation after Sunday's worship service at Knox.
