www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 9, 2008 - 13 Eighth annual Eco Festival focuses on sustainability The eighth annual Halton Eco Festival, a free, Earth Day environmental fair will be held Saturday, April 19. The festival, to be held at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre located on Third Line, just south of Upper Middle Road, will feature 18 educational workshops. "One of the most popular aspects of our free annual Halton Eco Festival (www.haltonecofest.ca) is the educational workshops," said event coordinator Stephen Dankowich who operates the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights (OCCPHER). "We have found that people in Halton Region really want to learn more about what they can do to protect and improve the natural environment. Local people are very concerned about their family's health because of environmental degradation and they are seeking more knowledge and awareness about what they can and should do about it in their own community," said Dankowich, OCCPHER executive director since 1992. Environmental sustainability is the theme of this year's event, which will have 18 workshop topics. From 11-11:45 a.m., visitors can choose between the workshop by Peter Schurmann of Redwell Canada on the subject of infrared radiant heating as home heating or by Ryan Colwell of C+C Planning on the subject of socially-responsible investing and how to make your mortgage tax-deductible. From noon to 12:45 p.m., three workshops will take place. Jennifer Rodriguez-Allen of Green Cleaning Services will talk about the hazards of household chemicals and alternatives. Doctor Nyla Jiwani of the Bronte Natural Health Clinic will explain how to reduce environmental damage to the body and how to decrease the natural progression of the body's aging process. Volunteer co-ordinator Deanna Smuk of Habitat for Humanity Halton will speak about recycling and how Halton Restore contributes to reducing the number of garbage trucks going to the landfill. From 1-1:45 p.m., there are three workshops including Julie DwyerYoung of the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace with a presentation entitled `Taking Canadian Mining to Account.' Ken Bontius of ARK II will discuss ecolPROUDLY SERVING HALTON SINCE 1987... ogy and the rights of animals while Chris Hilkene of the Clean Water Foundation will speak on how to conserve water in and around the home and save money. From 2-2:45 p.m., there also are three workshops including one by Barbara Birkett of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning organization called Physicians for Social Responsibility, who will speak about an international campaign to abolish nuclear weapons. Aku Richter of Richters Herbs will host a workshop all about herbs while Liz Benniean of Oakvillegreen will discuss a future, post-carbon Halton Region. From 3-3:45 p.m., another three workshops feature Paul O'Hara of Blue Oak Native Landscapes, who will talk about landscaping gardens with native plants; Jamie Masson of sponsor Project Greenlight illuminating you about energy efficient lighting, and Jadie McDonnell of the Ontario Healthy Communities Coalition sharing information about how to build a healthy Halton Region community. From 4-4:45 p.m., workshops feature Brenda Dolling of Whole Village Sustainable Farm and Ecovillage on the subject of actually building sustainability, the Halton Environmental Network (HEN) on the subject of solar panels for homeowners, and Alan Geller of Applied Nutrition Canada with a talk entitled `scary diagnosis' that encourages taking charge of your own health. The final workshop is from 55:45 p.m. and features Paul Lim of the Energy Healing Centre on relieving stress. In addition to the workshops, the 2008 Halton Eco Festival features two hockey rinks filled with one hundred exhibitors, including nine sponsoring organizations (Ten Thousand Villages, Project Greenlight, Town of Oakville, Smart Centre Oakville, GENEaction, Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association, Whole Foods Market Oakville, and the Kerr Village Organic Farmers' Market). Themed environmental areas include activism, automotive, books, education, energy, financial services, food, health and wellness, home and garden, natural products, nature, reducereuse-recycle, politics and government, and smart growth. The event also features a kids' eco fun area, a silent auction with more than 40 environmental gifts, games and great food.
