www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday April 5, 2008 - 5 Provincial cash for north bridge Halton Region officials are applauding a $3.5 million contribution, made by the Province of Ontario, to help fund the construction of the new Sixteen Mile Creek Bridge-North. The province's offering of the one-time grant is part of a new Municipal Infrastructure Investment Initiative (MIII) that will see the government shell out $450 million in funding to support municipal infrastructure priorities. Halton Region Chair Gary Carr expressed his appreciation for the province's help in funding the $22 million Sixteen Mile Creek Bridge-North project, but quickly added that more is required. "I am pleased that the provincial government is starting to recognize the importance of investing in municipal infrastructure," said Carr. "This funding will go towards ensuring we have the physical infrastructure-such as roads and bridgesto meet the demands of growth, but so much more needs to be done. Financing growth in Halton remains a challenge and we need a financial plan in place in order to move forward." The new Sixteen Mile Creek bridge project will eventually see two new three-lane bridges carrying Dundas Street (Regional Road 5) over Sixteen Mile Creek. The south bridge, which is being built without provincial funding, is currently under construction and will be completed before the existing bridge over Sixteen Mile Creek is torn down. With the older bridge destroyed the new Sixteen Mile Creek Bridge-North will be erected completing the four to six lane widening of Dundas Street between Neyagawa Boulevard and Proudfoot Trail. The north bridge will incorporate pedestrian and cycling facilities and a lookout over Lions Valley Park. The construction of the north bridge is expected to begin in early 2009 with completion expected in 2010. Howard Williams.ca After 130 years, our first sale ever, is also our very last sale. EVERYTHING MUST GO TO THE BARE WALLS Police investigating mystery shopper scam Halton police are investigating an online bank draft scam that leaves victims on the hook for fraudulent cheques. The scam solicits people to sign up as a "mystery shopper," which are typically hired by companies to pose as shoppers at their own stores and measure quality. In this scam, people would sign up online to become a mystery shopper themselves. They were then told to cash a bank draft, keep a fee, and send the remaining cash to another address - as part of a "mystery shopper" evaluation of a wire transfer company, Halton police said. But, the bank drafts are fakes. The duped participants are on the hook for the full balance that was cashed. Police remind the public there is a legitimate Mystery Shopping Company. The alleged frauds under investigation involve a company of another name. Police urge residents to use caution when dealing with anyone over the Internet and when asked to wire funds to an unknown party. Halton police continue to investigate, and are asking anyone who may have been victimized by the set-up to come forward. People should be wary of wiring money to someone they have never met, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 905-825-4777 Ext. 2368 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). -- Torstar News Service 33%66% OFF EVERYTHING NO EXCEPTIONS Original gold bullion pricing no adjustment made for increased gold pricing SALE HOURS: SUNDAY 11-5, MON-WED 10-7, THURS 10-9 FRIDAY 10-7, SAT CLOSED. 309 Lakeshore Road East Oakville 905-815-1220 If you haven't had the opportunity to hear her perform before, do yourself a favour and come out to see this "dynamic speaker...
