4- The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday April 5, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com CABINET REFACING AFTER Oakville's roads get $6.2-M boost from province Money will speed up Lakeshore Road West widening Oakville's crumbling roads will be getting a much-needed makeover in the near future thanks to a $6.2 million grant from the Ontario Government. The news of grant is particularly welcome as Oakville enters the post winter season with its Roads and Works department struggling to patch gapping potholes across the town. "This couldn't be more needed. The tough winter really beat up or roads," said Mayor Rob Burton. "We want to thank the Provincial Government for recognizing Oakville's infrastructure needs. These funds will ensure we continue to provide our residents with roadways and amenities that are safe and accessible." The first portion of the grant, $3.8 million, was awarded to the town through Ontario's Municipal Infrastructure Investment Initiative (MIII), which Oakville had applied for with the hope of revitalizing Lakeshore Road West from Great Lakes Boulevard to Mississaga Street. "We're really excited about receiving this grant funding," said Dave Bloomer, Commissioner of Infrastructure and Transportation Service. "Construction of this project was slated to begin in 2012. This puts us ahead by at least three years." Enhancements along Lakeshore Road will include new roadway pavement with improved pedestrian and cycling facilities, additional controlled pedestrian crossings, improved public transit access and the introduction of left/right turn lanes at Burloak Drive, Great Lakes Boulevard and Mississaga Street. The second portion of the provincial grant, $2.4 million, will go toward the restoration of roads and bridges throughout Oakville. "Our infrastructure is aging and requires renewal," said Bloomer. "This has never been more evident than with our recent winter break-up of several road pavement sections. We are one the right track to creating a more livable Oakville." The Town plans to begin engineering the MIII project in 2008 with construction beginning in 2009.
