E astview Public School held its annual Data Fair on Thursday, March 27. Three-and-a-half classes of Grade 7 students eagerly participated when they were given the challenge of creating and answering a question, through data collection, via primary and secondary sources such as the Internet and surveys. Some ideas were as simplistic as "Which brand of shoe should you buy?" while others required much more research and investigation to come to a reasonable conclusion. In many projects, products were tested for durability and quality, but some students chose to compare data they collected through Internet and library research. They were all displayed proudly. Students had been working intently for weeks on something very special that the whole school would appreciate. The extraordinary Data Fair was the result. Students sacrificed recesses and put their best effort forward to complete a math-related presentation to share with their schoolmates. These intriguing projects were showcased down the intermediate hallway and inside the classrooms. Parents, staff and other grade students at the school were encouraged to come and admire the work that had been done and the event was greatly attended. ible source from which they gathered their information. Some of the questions that were investigated were food-related and small treats were given out to the happy spectators. Some of the other displays were about security issues, human curiosity, fast food suppliers, and the durability of office supplies. The judges had their work cut out for them. Various members of the school community were asked to critique the work of the participants. Projects were judged in a couple of areas, the most important being whether or not the student (or students in the case of partnerships) could adequately display their data through graphs and analysis. They were also judged on the neatness and the "wow factor" of their board. Students were expected to have a cred- tough competition. In past years, Eastview has risen to the challenge and sent some A+ work to be rewarded with the honor of winning. Many more judges will be present and will be able to give constructive criticism. We hope everyone will learn something new and pass it on to the future participants of this fantastic learning venture. A word of advice, make sure you pick a topic you will enjoy and make sure to have fun with it. This year was a success no matter whom you talk to. We congratulate everyone on their superb effort and hope that even the people who did not participate learned something that they didn't know before. We wish everyone in the competition the best of luck, and we hope it will turn out to be an unforgettable experience.
