In huge swarms the invasive pests will climb to the treetops, eat their first leaves and, if all goes according to plan, that's the last thing they will ever do. The Town has hired BioForest Technologies Inc. to conduct aerial spraying of Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies kurstaki (Btk), a naturally occurring bacterium, permitted under the town's pesticide-bylaw, that will take out the caterpillars, but spare everything else. The cost of the spraying, which will take place in May in the areas of North Park, Trafalgar Lawn Cemetery, 16Mile Creek Trail (north of Upper Middle Road) and Winston Woods, is expected to reach $160,000, however, Town officials point out that doing nothing could cost a lot more. "We've been monitoring gypsy moths since 2005 as part of our annual gypsy moth egg mass survey. We hired a forestry expert to undertake the survey and they covered around 40 town properties," said John McNeil, Manager of Forestry and Cemetery Services with the Town of Oakville, during a public information meeting on Tuesday.
