www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 2, 2008 - 13 Destiny definitely part of BII's design Continued from page 11 "My grandmother, Mary Campbell, used to work at Birks in Toronto and she was brought out here as manager when Birks first came to Oakville," said Larsen, adding, "There is a lot of history involved." That history saw Prescott and Larsen first become friends when their young sons were in school. Many years later, the friends have shared lots: their respective families' growing years -- each has two children now in their early 20s -- a divorce and the decision to dive into business together. Though that latter decision may have been made over sharing some Pino Grecio, it was a call neither hesitated to make, they said. "We literally jumped off a cliff and plowed right into it, but we did not even think twice about it," said Prescott. Both women had stayed home with their children though Prescott had studied biology and chemistry and worked in consulting before delving into retail merchandising. Larsen had training in retail merchandising and had watched her mom operate the store over the years. Both women live in the downtown -- Prescott some 125 steps from the store, while Larsen lives a little further afield, on nearby John Street. Both agree that fundamentally they are risk takers and like challenges that make life that little bit more interesting. They have achieved that since taking over ownership of the 1,500-sq.-ft. shop. And the duo is still friends despite having become business partners a number of years ago. "We have our moments," said Prescott, while Larsen notes, "You have the same kind of give and take as you do with a marriage, except you can't afford the divorce." All joking aside, the pair travels to New York City and Las Vegas annually to view clothing lines and buy merchandise. This month however, they're throwing a party to celebrate their store's 50th anniversary with special events taking place every Wednesday during the month. Tonight there is a private cocktail reception. On Wednesday, April 9, customers are invited to learn the art of the Hawaiian Muru Aki massage with in-store mini massages and makeup applications. On Wednesday, April 16, an in-store fashion show will highlight the colours of spring and come with complimentary makeup tips and applications. On Wednesday, April 23, fashion will meet beauty with complimentary mini-facials plus hairstyle advice and makeup applications. On Wednesday, April 30, an in-store fashion show will highlight Barbette BII's exclusive designer lines from upscale casual to contemporary chic, as well as feature complimentary makeup applications. All Wednesday events take place between 1 and 3 p.m. and will run in partnership with the Sanctuary Day Spa, also in downtown Oakville. A goody bag will go to the first 25 customers for each Wednesday event and one draw will be made each Wednesday for a five-hour Sanctuary Spa Refresher package.
