www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday March 21, 2008 - 7 Is Oakville a town or city? Pro Town I wonder if Steve Edgar, author of Isn't it time for the Town of Oakville to become a city? (Oakville Beaver, March 12) has missed the intrinsic value of our one-of-akind historic lakeside Town. Cities are everywhere. Historic towns, with an undeniable character evolved over centuries, are ghosting away in the dust of the current "development gold-rush." Were you raised in Oakville, Steve? Do you remember the bountiful farmland and grazing livestock you used to see on a drive in the country along Hwy. 5? You'll never see that again. There are residents of Oakville Town who abandoned "city life" in search of a home with unique character and relative peace; Editor's note: In The Oakville Beaver, March 12 edition, we ran a letter from Steve Edgar suggesting it was time the Town of Oakville became the City of Oakville. We asked for your thoughts on this subject and you responded. Send your opinion to editor@oakvillebeaver.com. access to Lake Ontario and river ravines with their astonishing wildlife; attractive and cared-for heritage homes, downtown shop and greenspace enticements that invite reflective and rewarding walking; the comfort of knowing our neighbours and the pleasure of exchanging greetings with casual passers-by. I've experienced "city life" and this ain't it! Thank God. Sorry Steve. I have to vote for keeping our Oakville a town (and even a secret!); for defending its historic and environmental treasures and its justified pride in its unique self. City people come and go. Oakville townfolk care enough about this jewel to pick up the litter after them. It's not a matter of population or a (wow) city title on a business card. It's about preserving things that are important to the heart that will never be again. D.C. MILLS Crime Prevention Starts in the Neighbourhood www.oakvilleneighbourhoodwatch.ca WINTER SALE ON NOW! I voted against the GTA pooling bill when I was a Provincial Member of Parliament. At both the Federal and Provincial level and as Speaker of the Ontario Legislature, I have been an outspoken advocate for my constituents. I will continue to fight both the federal and provincial governments of all political stripes to ensure they begin to properly fund our infrastructure.
