Honda Canada will manage the CBR125R spec series this coming season (May 2008) with support from Parts Canada Superbike Championship organizer Professional Motorsports Productions (PMP). The Honda CBR125R Challenge will run at selected rounds of the Parts Canada National Superbike Championship. Honda Canada hopes to provide an opportunity for new and existing enthusiasts who have considered racing, to do so at an affordable price. This series is envisioned as a starter class for these young aspiring road racers who are aiming to improve their skills and move up the competition ladder. In keeping with this, riders planning to compete in the Honda CBR125R Challenge next season must be between the ages of 14 and 22 as of January 1, 2008. Competitors under the age of 18 must provide full documentation and complete a parent/guardian consent and waiver. The Honda CBR125R will run near-stock with engine performance restricted and horsepower checked on the official Parts Canada Superbike Championship Dynojet Dyno. All bikes will be equipped with the OE catalytic converter. Pirelli spec tires will be used in the series. A specified race conversion kit will be available through participating Honda dealers; this kit will include the parts that are permitted to be changed under the Parts Canada Championship rules for the Honda CBR125R Challenge. Parts include an Elka shock, Mimic bodywork, Arrow bolt-on exhaust canister, Z-1 frame sliders, Parts Canada work stand and a certificate for Pirelli Supercorsa approved race rubber. Honda Canada and PMP hope to see the new national series branch out to run with other regional club classes in road race series across Canada. "We see this series as acting as a stepping stone into other racing classes," said Colin Fraser, president of PMP. "This will provide racers with an inexpensive way to learn road racing. These are easy bikes to ride and learn on, and this sort of development class is quite common in Europe." Honda Canada launched the CBR125R in 2007 in conjunction with the "Go Combo" program aimed to bring new riders into the sport of motorcycling. The bike is powered by a 125cc liquid-cooled, four-stroke single-cylinder engine and takes its styling cues from its larger cc siblings the CBR600RR and the CBR1000RR. Dry weight for the stock CBR125R is 118.9kg and horsepower is quoted at 13.4hp at 10,000 rpm. The bike features electronic fuel injection and a six-speed transmission.
