www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday March 14, 2008 - 7 Town or city? Pro City Thank you, thank you Mr. Edgar for bringing common sense to this issue. It's way past time. Oakville is a not just a city but a large city and should be named as such. LINDA DA COSTA Editor's note: In Wednesday's Oakville Beaver we ran a letter from Steve Edgar suggesting it was time the Town of oakville became the City of Oakville. We asked for your thoughts on this subject and you responded. If you still want to comment, send your opinion to editor@oakvillebeaver.com Don't Pay Retail! Factory Outlet Sale We Install Pro Town Pro City It seems to me that we propagate the myth of being a town because we want to hold on to our own secret society. Like most myths, reality is far different. As the itinerant executive's temporary abode, we are far removed from the time when we were the closed old money town in Ontario. We are a city and we act like a city. It seems to me that if we are now spending money to attract tourists, a city would be a greater draw than a town. A town conjures up the American rural flavour of communities that you can blink and miss. They are not great tourist attractions. JIM GRADDON I'm writing in response to Steve Edgar's letter to the editor asking Isn't it time for the Town of Oakville to become a city? I was at the Mayor's New Year's Levee in January when a speaker addressing the crowd made reference to the "city" of Oakville. An audience member shouted out "It's the Town of Oakville." Indeed it is, the official designation being The Corporation of the Town of Oakville. It's not about the population size, even though "officially" we are city-sized. I like the quaintness of Oakville still being called a "town." I wish it still was, size-wise, but that's another issue. Perhaps Mr. Edgar is a (relative) newcomer to Oakville and has no knowledge of when it really was a town. Let's keep the Town in the Town of Oakville. JANET DYMOCK Columns Wainscoting Over 70 Smooth or Patterned Profiles Pro Town As a little boy I moved into the Town of Oakville in 1966 from the City of Scarborough. My parents were tired of the problems with a city that was suburbia with people who wanted everyone to have a perfect lawn and paved driveway. The Town of Oakville had a great reputation for a safe, clean and courteous lifestyle with some leeway for individual thinking. Pro Town I have been a proud resident of the Town of Oakville since 1959. Only newcomers refer to Oakville as a "city." JILLIAN WAGENER Visit our website or showrooms for prices, design ideas.
