12 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday March 14, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com The Second Cup co-founder overcame earlier struggles Frank O'Dea to speak at Transitions for Youth fundraiser Transitions For Youth (TFY) workers who try to help and inspire struggling teens will get a boost to their cause when someone who encountered similar troubles, and overcame them, speaks at an upcoming fundraiser for the organization. On Tuesday, March 25, TFY will host the second annual Champions of Youth speaker series at the Burlington Convention Centre, 1120 Burloak Dr. The series features prominent Canadian speakers discussing issues that have a significant impact on the next generation. This year's event will feature Frank O'Dea, co-founder of The Second Cup coffee store chain. O'Dea will receive the Champions of Youth Award for his on-going commitment to making the future brighter for young people. Last year's inaugural award was presented to former U.S. President Bill Clinton and former Ontario Premier Bob Rae. The award was designed by Canadian artist Shirley Elford, creator of the Juno music award. The fundraising event is expected to attract 400 business people, community members and youth from across Halton Region who have an interest in public affairs and social issues. With demand for its services growing, Transitions for Youth (TFY) launched a new foundation in the fall of 2006. Events like Champions of Youth are designed to help the TFY Foundation build an endowment fund to ensure that vulnerable, at-risk children, youth and families are able to receive TFY's services. TFY has served the Halton community for 27 years. In 2006-07, it worked with more than 4,300 children, youths and adults in its prevention, early intervention, crisis and emergency, liaison and residential and treatment programs. TFY works with children and youth who are homeless, have difficulty controlling their anger, become involved with drugs, crime and other risky behaviours, are emotionally or behaviourally challenged, chronically depressed or anxious, have difficulty making friends, are often bullied or require non-judgmental health care through the Pulse clinic, which is reopening March 25 at 700 Guelph Line. Ellis Katsof, TFY's executive direcneered the industry of on-site document destruction. He then began serving on the boards of directors of charities and not-forprofit organizations. In 1985 he cofounded Street Kids International, an organization to help homeless children in Third World countries, through education and self-reliant programs. A few years later, he became the founding chair of War Child (Canada), an organization that provides assistance against suffering and abuse of children in war-torn countries. In the same year, he co-founded the Canadian Landmine Foundation, an organization that raises funds for the dismantling of minefields around the world. O'Dea holds an honourary Doctor of Law degree from Royal Roads University in Victoria, B.C. A book about his inspiring journey, When All You Have is Hope, was released last August. For his humanitarian works, O'Dea was made an Officer of the Order of Canada by the Governor General. Katsof said he hopes many teens and young adults will attend O'Dea's talk. So far, corporate donations have enabled TFY to provide four tables for 32 youths for free. The Champions of Youth reception stars at 6 p.m., with dinner served at 7 p.m. The award will be presented to O'Dea followed by his speech at 8:20 p.m. There will be a book signing at the end of the evening with youth having an opportunity to meet O'Dea. To purchase tickets, which are $125 each (with a $50 tax receipt), call 905632-6531, ext. 0. For more information, visit www.tfyhalton.ca. Frank O'Dea tor, said O'Dea's story of redemption going from a homeless teen/young adult to a successful entrepreneur - is inspiring. He's hoping it will have an impact on youth and business representatives who attend the Champions of Youth event. "He's an incredibly inspirational, powerful speaker," said Katsof. "He is the exact type of person we work with. In his (youth) he abused alcohol to deaden the pain, and he dug down to get help for himself." O'Dea's website says his life went off the rails in his early teens. He ended up living in 50-cent-a-night flophouses in Toronto's bowery district. At 23, he began the long road back. Within a few short years he co-founded The Second Cup, which became the largest retail chain of gourmet coffees and teas in Canada. He went on to co-found Proshred Security, a company that pio- This Sunday! (March 16/08) Hourly Door Prizes!
