The local mall is today launching a new blog initiative for sharing eco-friendly tips. The best tip will earn the tipster a trip for two to Australia, and carbon credits will be purchased to offset the trip, says marketing director of Oakville Place, Kim LaRonde. 60 Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia last year and uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming. In one year it has morphed into a global movement where millions of people in some of the world's major capital cities, including Toronto, Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne, Brisbane and Tel Aviv, will switch off their power for one hour at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 29. "There's a new awareness of how seemingly small efforts can have a significant and global impact," says LaRonde. "When 2.2 million households turned off their lights in Sydney, Australia last year, the energy savings was equivalent to taking 48,000 cars off the road for one year. The Oakville Place blog for eco-friendly tips can be accessed by clicking the OP Go Green button on the www.oakvilleplace.com home page. Shoppers can even register live online in the food court at Oakville Place with the assistance of a customer service representative. To be eligible to win the trip to Australia, where 60 Earth Hour began, contestants have two choices. They can either submit three things they do to conserve energy or, in 50 words or less, describe their eco-friendly plans for celebrating 60 Earth Hour on March 29 at 8 p.m. The contest is open to residents of Ontario 18 years or older. All entries will be posted at www.oakvilleplace.com. Entrants then need everyone they know, including friends and relatives, to vote online for their submissions as being the best ideas. Voting will take place from March 19 25. Those with a submission ranked in the top 60 will become finalists. They will be invited to Oakville Place on March 29, where they will receive their ballot for the live draw to determine the winner of the trip for two to Australia. "The new OP Go Green blog site will stay alive after 60 Earth Hour. We hope it will encourage people to continue to share tips and practice eco-friendly living on a daily basis," said LaRonde. To register for 60 Earth Day and enter to win a trip to Australia, visit the Oakville Place Food Court between March 715 or go to www.oakvilleplace.com and look for the OPGoGreen button on the home page.
