www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday February 23, 2008 - 5 God's role at council By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF New Patients Welcome! Dear Neighbour, If you are looking for a new dental office in Oakville, I would like to welcome you to consider my practice. My office has developed a number of amenities to make you and your family feel as comfortable as possible during your time with us. Some of these amenities include satellite televisions in each of our treatment rooms so you can watch your favorite programs or you can listen to music on an IPOD with BOSE noise cancelling headphones. We also have the fabulous, new ICUITI Digital Video Personal Eyewear glasses that allow you to watch DVD's on a virtual large screen TV. We have developed a number of special amenities that have been specifically added for your children's comfort including a Playstation 3 with a 40-inch Sony Hi-Definition flat screen LCD TV in the children's section of the reception room. I have recently invested in a dental laser that can treat cavities in you or your children's teeth without the drilling sound or vibration. The Laser treatment can lead to a decrease in the amount of anesthetic that is required during the visit to treat the cavity and improve the overall dental experience for you and your child. I am very fortunate to have a caring and friendly team that are committed to your overall oral health and will make you feel welcome and respected. If you have any questions about our office, please feel free to call us at 905-827-1619. We look forward to meeting with you and creating a long-term relationship. Sincerely The question of whether God has any place in a Town council meeting drew mixed answers Thursday night as Oakville residents attended a public information session to give their two cents on the issue. The session, which drew a total of four people, was held by the Town after Ward 6 Councillor Tom Adams introduced a December motion that would replace the non-denominational prayer currently spoken at the start of each council meeting with a moment of silent reflection. The prayer in question reads: `God, grant us understanding and patience, that justice, truth and honesty may be evident in our decisions. Make us mindful of the needs of the people throughout the Town of Oakville. Help us govern with the wider community in mind and so create in us a desire for progress and responsible action. We ask this in your name. Amen.' Adams noted that in today's society something more inclusive is necessary. "A moment of silence for personal reflection gives people the opportunity to pray if they wish to and to pray in whatever manner they feel is appropriate, be that a Christian prayer, Muslim prayer or any other form of prayer," he said. "We have a growing community of Jeff Knoll various denominations and I think it is important to make people feel as comfortable as we can in the public setting. We're a public government, there is a separation of church and state, and this is part of that." Whether it is appropriate to speak a prayer prior to a state function was a decision deemed too important to vote on without consulting the public, and as such, Adams' motion was deferred pending public consultation. Ward 5 Councillor Jeff Knoll, who called for the deferral, voiced an opposite opinion pointing out that he sees value in the prayer. "It doesn't just allow us to commune with God, but it gives us an opportunity to remind ourselves that we need to be mindful of the needs of Dr. Stephen Phelan Dental Surgeon.
