Challenge is not new to Brooks By Melanie Cummings SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Meeting super cyclist Lance Armstrong transformed 16-year-old Andy Brooks from a couch potato to a crosscountry rider in a matter of months. The White Oaks Secondary School (WOSS) student is training for a national bike ride to raise money for kids with cancer -- kids like him. The teen, who also counts Terry Fox among his heroes, aims to raise $16,000 to contribute to the overall goal of $1.5 million for the inaugural Sears National Kids Cancer Ride, which begins June 2. Over 19 days he'll pedal 456 hours, with more than 100 avid cyclists, on a route that stretches 7,600 km between Vancouver and Halifax. His schoolmates at White Oaks are rallying behind the Grade 11 go-getter by participating in an Inside Ride on April 23. Thirty teams of six will get a taste of Andy's training regimen by mimicking the experience indoors. Inside Rides at Abbey Park High and St. Matthew's Church are in the works and two Starbucks franchises (at Third Line and another at Dorval Drive) are climbing on bikes to raise money, too.
