www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 6, 2008 - 19 EDUCATION Trailhead Grade 10 BCP Grade 11-12 Independent school offers a unique educational experience "The education offered by John Knox Christian School is different from most other elementary schools in the Oakville, Mississauga area," says director of development Lawrence Lutgendorff. "Our mission is to educate the whole child, academically, socially, emotionally, physically and spiritually, incorporating a Christian faith perspective. The parents at our school want an educational choice that reflects the values of their home," said Lutgendorff. A study published by the Frazer Institute found that private school attendance in Ontario has grown to 5.6% of the student population. The study, titled: Ontario's Private Schools: Who Chooses Them and Why? found safety, dedicated teachers, academic quality, a whole child approach to learning and the development of student character ranked highest among preferred school characteristics. Parent teacher collaboration, also ranked highly among parents surveyed. Cindy Philips a parent at John Knox said, "Parents know that when they are involved in their child's education they do better. Allowing parents to actively participate is what makes John Knox unique for me." Principal John Lunshof described the school saying; "This is a great school, and I can say this with enthusiasm because JKCS is nationally accredited through the Canadian Hallmarks Institute. We meet all the standards for a first class elementary school." John Knox's programs include, fine art instruction, a drama and band program; information technology, with computers both in the classroom and in a lab; and an extensive physical education program with intra-mural and competitive sports teams. In addition, JKCS has a resource program to meet the special needs of students as well as an enrichment program. "We have to be better at everything, because our parents have high standards and many schools to choose from," says Lutgendorff. "Our approach combines academic excellence, concern for the whole child, and parental participation in school life," said Principal Lunshof. "This style of teaching and governance has worked throughout the 49 year history of JKCS, and we continue to position ourselves as the community leader in Christian elementary education in Oakville and Mississauga."
