www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday January 19, 2008 - 39 Three Venom teams medal Oakville Venom teams have plenty of momentum as they host a bantam girls' basketball tournament this weekend. The AAA bantam squad is coming off a gold-medal performance at the Brantford CYO Tournament last weekend, its second tournament title of the season. The AA team, meanwhile, won silver at the same tournament. This weekend's Oakville Basketball Club tournament tipped off this morning and will conclude with semifinal and final contests tomorrow (Sunday) at Abbey Park High School. In Brantford, the AAA Venom won all four of its games, improving to 9-0 against Ontario competition this season. Oakville downed Valhalla, Dundas, Welland and Blessed Sacrament, as Jovana Momic and Emily Wilk earned division 1 MVP honours. Also contributing were Rachelle Cyrus, Courtney Den Elzen, Alex Ruscica, Nina Guzina, Kayla Davis, Courtney Chambers, Sarah Traynor, Leah Fleming and Rasheeka Gunn. Coaches are Pat Traynor and Cassandra Cyrus. The AA Venom, meanwhile, went 2-1 in division play before downing Port Colbourne in the semifinal. Oakville was denied gold with a loss to Ancaster in the championship game. Lydia Gibson was named the Venom's tournament MVP. Other members of the AA squad are Alyssa Booth, Nicole Fernandes, Rebecca Forbes, Morgan Caissie, Sabrina Glavota, Charlotte Walker, Sera Smith, Laura D'aurizio, Holly Rowe, Kristina Rajacic and Marissa Wiebe. Players on the team include Ellie Hannaford, Ruta Rekus, Nevena Aksin, Amanda Swinhoe, Larisa Saplys, Selena Singh, Marti Killeen, Nicole Garcia, Kayla Harnden, Brittney Phannenhour, Lea Kirkconnell and Alia Tewari. Bill Killeen and Charles Singh are the club's coaches. Oakville's novices almost became the fourth local team to medal at the tournament, reaching the bronze-medal game before falling 17-14 to St. Catharines. The Venom went 3-0 in preliminary-round play and was the top seeed heading into the semifinals, but it was upset 26-22 by Scarborough. Maggie Curran, Chloe Dickison, Stephanie Findlay, Anastasia Levreault, Ashley McDonald, Ellen Ougrinov, Sarah Piercey, Kiana Steinhauer, Caroline Szustak, Jordan Tracey, Olivia Wilson and Melody Wyslobicky all contributed to the Venom's strong showing. The Oakville Basketball Club is hosting a bantam girls' tourney this weekend. Team submissions to appear soon With the high number of tournaments contested during the recent holiday season, there have been plenty of team submissions to The Oakville Beaver this month. We are trying to accommodate each submission request as quickly as possible, and aim to run each of them in upcoming editions of the Beaver. In the meantime, coaches and parents continue to be encouraged to submit results and photos from tournaments and league action. Those submissions can be e-mailed to sports editor Jon Kuiperij at sports@oakvillebeaver.com. Submitted photos should be sent in .jpeg file format, at the highest resolution possible, to ensure adequate reproduction quality in the paper. HOMEWORKERS N e e d e d ! ! !
