www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday January 19, 2008 - 17 H E A LT H & W E L L N E S S How does BOTOX® work for hyperhidrosis? BOTOX® blocks the nervous system stimulation of the sweat glands in the armpits or palms or other localized areas. It is directly injected into the skin in the area that is sweating excessively. After a few days, significant and often dramatic reduction in sweating is seen in many patients. The duration of effect lasts on average 4-6 months, but some patients get up to a year of reduced sweating from an injection. Side effects are minimal in the axilla (armpits) though transient muscle weakness can occur in the palms. Botox® may also be used for "social sweating" such as a special presentation or your wedding day. Botox® is a formulation of Botulinum Toxin Type A. It is produced by a naturally occurring bacteria, but today is manufactured under strict control in a laboratory. Botox® blocks the neurotransmission from the sympathetic nerves in the skin to the sweat glands and reduces excessive sweating in the areas that are injected. The effects last between 4 to 6 months and the treatments will need to be repeated.BOTOX® has been shown in several medical studies to be a very effective treatment for patients with localized hyperhidrosis. If underarm sweating is significantly interfering with your daily activities and topical agents haven't worked, you may be a candidate for BOTOX® treatment. First, understand how this condition may affect you. Then schedule a visit to a qualified physician to discuss products and treatment options to ensure that your outcomes are the best that they can be. BOTOX® is FDA-approved for the treatment of severe underarm sweating that is not adequately managed with topical agents. Ask you doctor today if BOTOX® treatment is right for you, (this treatment is covered by most private health insurance plans). Submitted by S.J. The good news? It doesn't take much to make your routine more 'liver-healthy.' The following are 6 simple ways to LIVERight: 1. When grocery shopping, fill your cart with low fat, high fibre foods and lots of fruits and vegetables. A healthy, well balanced diet can help keep your liver functioning well and you feeling more energetic. 2. Park the car and walk. Exercise helps keep your body -- especially your liver -- strong and able to fight off viruses, disease and pollutants. It also helps control your weight -- a key factor in the development of fatty liver disease. 3. Use natural cleaning products. All chemicals and toxins that you breathe in or get on your skin are processed by your liver. The fewer harsh chemicals you use, the less stress you put on your liver. 4. If you're planning a trip -- to a tropical island or even a local restaurant -- consider getting immunized against hepatitis A and B. Everyday activities like eating out, having sex, sharing toothbrushes or nail clippers can put you at risk of exposure to these serious liver diseases. Hepatitis A is spread through contaminated food or water and hepatitis B is spread through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of an infected person. 5. When filling a prescription, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about all medications, vitamins or other remedies you may be taking. Misusing or combining medications or natural health products can cause damage to the liver. 6. Think before you drink. If you drink alcohol, it's not the type but the amount that matters. A bottle of beer, a glass of wine or a mixed drink -- it's all the same to your liver. Alcohol is best enjoyed in moderation -- no more than one to two drinks at a time and never on a daily basis.
