The southeast parking lot extends far enough into a tiny marshland and grassland ecosystem. I have faced the problem of not finding any legal parking spots left. I'm trying to solve it by trying to cycle or even walk ­ 30 minutes! ­ to the station. One of the pleasures of being out of the car, aside from the obvious health benefits, is the chance to witness a little wildlife. The area that some propose for more parking supports a remarkable amount of bird and insect life. In the spring, the rain creates a marshy area that becomes a nesting place for red-winged blackbirds, who greet me on the way to my morning train. Dragonflies dart around and butterflies delight the eyes. Even ducks and geese come to visit. In the evenings, as I return home from my train, sandpipers zip across the parking area and hide in the grasses, peeping noisily. Sometimes, I catch sight of a rabbit hopping by. It's truly a wonder that such a small area can support so much and such a variety of life. As Oakville's population continues to increase, we must look to better solutions to parking issues than simply paving over all our open spaces.
