A lot has changed since George Armstrong hoisted that silver vessel: Canada was celebrating its centennial year. It is true that there are now five times as many teams vying for the greatest prize in all of sports. I hope it won't be Canada's bi-centennial when the Leafs next win it. Many fans feel some changes have to be made in order for the Leafs to go all the way. In my opinion, we should trade Mats Sundin for young players and draft picks before the trade deadline, then, in the off-season, re-sign Sundin. I would also trade Andrew Raycroft, Brian McCabe and Darcy Tucker. This strategy would enable the Leafs to secure better talent on which a strong con- tender can be built. This is a proven strategy, just look at the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers have gone from being the worst in the league to a solid contender this season. It's almost criminal that the Leafs have not won since the 1966/67 season. It is safe to say that the majority of Leafs fans are of an age that they have never experienced the euphoria of being a winner. However, the Duck fans, Star fans and the Tampa Bay fans have all enjoyed that feeling of excitement. How sad is that? These fans don't even know what snow is. Toronto Maple Leafs fans are amazing because they support their team no matter how poorly it performs. This has to stop. It is time that the Leafs organization, from Ferguson to Maurice, and all the players, support the fans. Leafs fans are a special breed because they never waver in their support. There needs to be a commitment; a new deal between the fans and team. It all comes down to economics. Fans pay between $150$400 to watch these athletes provide perennial disappointment; perhaps the team and organization would provide two free games a season until they achieve a play-off place. Is that too much to ask? It's just a few days into this new year of 2008 and I would like to invite the Leafs to make three New Year's resolutions: make the play-offs, lower the seat prices, and, within the next 10 years, win the Stanley Cup.
