www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday January 9, 2008 - 11 March of Dimes campaign comes knocking this month January is Ontario March of Dimes month, and the organization's largest fundraising campaign is underway. For more than 56 years, Ontarians have braved the winter weather canvassing door-to-door to raise funds for March of Dimes' essential programs and services, helping to increase the independence and community participation of people with physical disabilities. The door-to-door campaign provides much-needed support to March of Dimes' Assistive Devices Program (ADP). ADP, which is supported 100 per cent by donor dollars, provides assistance to people with disabilities towards the purchase and maintenance of equipment such as manual and motorized wheelchairs, bath aids, seating inserts and wheelchair cushions, canes, crutches, walkers and more. Oakville resident Stephen Cull has been receiving services from March of Dimes for 16 years, since he became a quadriplegic as the result of tobogganing accident. He received equipment from ADP. "Quite simply, March of Dimes is an integral part of my daily life," said Cull. "They help me and others live more independently." Cull is very active in the Oakville community, running www.charterability.com that helps groups of people with disabilities to get out on the water boating and fishing. Cull encourages residents to give generously this year when March of Dimes canvassers come knocking at their door. "The goal is to raise more than $30,000 in Oakville and provide more services to people like Stephen," said Mary Lynne Stewart, Director of Fund Development and Communications for Ontario March of Dimes. This year, the organization has recruited over 13,000 volunteers to help in its fundraising goal of $1 million across the province. Monies collected through the Door-to-Door Campaign will help the thousands of Ontarians with physical disabilities, many of whom have been waiting months or even years for programs and services. Ontario March of Dimes is the largest charitable rehabilitation organization in Ontario, providing a wide variety of programs and services to almost 40,000 people annually across the province.
