www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 4, 2008 - 5 Dip attracts Polar Bears from far and near ANNOUNCEMENT Alliance Healthcare Professionals WELCOMES IT'S NEW ARRIVAL FROM SOUTH AFRICA Paul Ginsberg, D. Ch Registered Chiropodist Continued from page 1 The funds from this year's dip will help build water systems in Darfur, Sudan. "Sudan is under conflict right now. They're living in such a dire situation with no access to clean water and with poor sanitation," said Trent. With the funds four villages in Sudan will have boreholes drilled, wells installed, water pipes laid and existing wells repaired. "It's great, they're so passionate," says Richard Chapman, World Vision development advisor. "They have such a heart for wanting to make other people's lives better." His goal was to help 7,000 people with the money raised at the event. With clean water he said fewer children will die from airborne diseases. Oakville resident Colin Bales raised $5,500 and counting for the dip, which he did with his daughter Kiana. Bales recently came back from a trip to Africa where he saw the effects of unsanitary water first hand. "I went to bed thirsty for the first time in my life," he said. In Africa he spoke to about 2,700 children at an elementary school. The principal told him that on most days the only meal these children ate was the breakfast provided by World Vision. When he was told about the polar bear dip and its fundraising goal he emailed his employer to begin raising money. His boss, Rick Eastwood, matched every dollar Bales raised. "I can't think of a better cause; water is a basic necessity," he said. Yaro Polowianiuk was another first timer at the event. The North York resident was a little nervous and sure the water would be shocking. "If you did it alone, it would never happen," he says. "But with other people around and doing it for a good cause, you can't be chicken." Polowianiuk wants the event to become better known so that more people participate next year. These dippers agreed that while the water may be frosty, they would recommend it to others. "The more the better," says Polowianiuk. "It would be nicer with some palm trees, though."
