Inside Opinion..............................................6 Worship............................................12 Artscene...........................................25 Sports...............................................30 Real Estate.......................................32 Classified ........................................35 Polar Bears raise $59,000 for water project There was no shortage of goose bumps and chattering teeth down at Coronation Park on the first day of 2008 for the 23rd annual Courage Brothers Polar Bear Dip, where more than 400 people took the plunge into the icy cold water of Lake Ontario. The Courage brothers, Trent and Todd, have been raising money through the popular event for World Vision for nearly 15 years, bringing in more than $400,000, including about $59,000 raised this year. It is the largest amount they have raised in a single year. Participants were lined up for registration right up until 2 p.m. when Canada's largest charity polar bear dip was scheduled to start. "We've never had a back up for registration before," said Peter Turkington, Australian Polar Bear Bernie Sostar spokesperson for the event. "We had a really good turn out this year." Todd Courage said the event has grown from half a dozen guys jumping into the frigid waters to shake off the cobwebs from the New Year festivities to hundreds of people from all over the GTA coming to participate in raising money for a great charity. "It started as something fun and turned into something powerful," he said. "It's a great way to kick off the New Year and bring awareness about how fortunate we are to have clean water in Canada." He and his two boys Vaughn, 6, and Cade, 4, ran in together this year. For both boys, it was their second time. Before the New Year's dip, Trent and Todd did a pre-dip to promote the event. "You tend to hyperventilate," said Trent. "Your feet are the things that hurt the most. You're just trying to catch your breath and get out. Once you're out with a warm blanket and new shoes it feels fantastic."
