14 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 4, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Impaired drivers still on local roads Halton Police are reporting an encouraging decrease in the number of roadside suspensions handed out during their holiday RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaign. During the campaign, which ran from Dec. 1 to Dec. 31, Halton Regional Police officers stopped a total of 35,877 vehicles in RIDE checks, conducted 190 roadside breath tests, gave 28 drivers 12-hour licence suspensions and charged three people with impaired driving offences (two in Burlington, one in Oakville). "We're down from last year," said Halton Police Public Affairs Sgt. Brian Carr. "Last year we stopped 27,359 vehicles, conducted 199 roadside breath tests and handed out 54 roadside license suspensions. So I find that (this year's suspension total) very encouraging." While the decrease may be a positive sign, Carr says he's not celebrating just yet, as any alcohol-related driving suspension or charge is unacceptable. "The fact is we still have numbers in these areas, and when they're all zeros we'll be doing a lot better," he said. "Unfortunately that day is far away, but with our educational programs still going on and with MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) helping out we might get there." During the campaign Halton Police also slapped 10 individuals with drug charges under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act while a total of 300 charges under the Highway Traffic Act were laid against others. Police report that five people were charged with driving while under suspension, three novice drivers were charged with driving with a blood alcohol concentration above zero and 27 people were charged with insurance violations. In addition to the RIDE charges, community patrol officers charged 22 other drivers with impaired driving offences (two in Milton, three in Halton Hills, eight in Oakville and nine in Burlington). Halton police are pointing out that although the holiday RIDE campaign is concluded they will continue to conduct RIDE spotchecks throughout the year. SUPER 8!
