Was McPhail Audience
In it [sic] report of the nomination last week the Durham Review, a supporter of Mr. Hastie, gives one the impression that it believes his case is a forlorn hope. It says the convention was largely favorable to the lady candidate, and winds up an excellent report with the following comment:--
—“All three speakers got a good hearing and it was most regrettable this attitude was not continued to Mr. Ball in his ten minutes for reply. Some of the audience literally had "cold feet" with the long stand on the clay floor and it was indifference to hear more rather than intention to interrupt, that prevented Mr. Ball from getting a good reply. His parting shot was “if you want a reduction of 35c on your wheat, 25c on your potatoes,-- more on your cattle and other products, vote for Miss McPhail,” and this the majority of that big audience seem likely to do.
"Three cheers for the King and three more for Miss McPhail closed the meeting.
“That Miss McPhail has caught the imagination of the electorate in a high degree was evident from her reception in Hall and Rink. U.F.O. forces were in a majority in the audience and knew it.
"The speech of Miss McPhail was both condemned and commended according to the point of view. It can at least be said that she knew her audience and gratified it by caustic and mostly deserved damnation of the powers that be.
"Mr. Ball should have known it was a McPhail audience by the time he essayed his 10 min. reply. A quip or light hearted joke from him would have won him both attention and votes. Of course no one justifies the discourtesy of the interruptions. It was the first time in the history of Durham that Conservative candidate was turned down.
"Friends of the Maid of Ceylon were figuring on a four figure majority at the closing of the proceedings! ?”
