The Oakville Trafalgar High School Grade 9 student will leave for Florida this week to race go-karts. Preston was invited to race for the Elite Juncos Racing Team in the Florida Winter Tour and will compete in the Junior Rotax division. It will be Preston's first time racing in the winter months, though he doesn't expect the racing instincts will take long to kick in after a couple of months off the track. "Hopefully it won't take too long," he said. "Maybe a day or two." The first race of the series will be held at the Homestead NASCAR track, where 68 of the best go kart racers will be competing. Preston's opportunity came up through one of his sponsors. They contacted team owner Ricardo Juncos and he extended an invitation to the 13year-old. "I've heard a lot about it and about how prestigious it is, so to get invited is very cool," Preston said. "I never thought I would be in it." Preston got his start at the age of seven after going to the track with his GO-KARTER GOING SOUTH: Oakville Trafalgar student Max Preston, pictured with his go-kart, will compete with the Elite Juniors Racing Team in Florida this winter. older brother, who was racing karts. Preston has had success, winning club and regional titles in the four-stroke Honda division. This past season, he won five races on the Brian Stewart Racing Karting series and was narrowly edged (1240-1228) for the junior lite season point total. He was also one of the front runners at the Waterloo track, earning a pair of victories and several podium finishes. Preston hopes to eventually move up from karts to Formula First, a developmental open wheel racing series, with the ultimate goal of reaching open wheel racing's pinnacle -- Formula One. -- Herb Garbutt Rangers, sponsors donate to E.C. Drury Continued from page 50 ping their sticks on the ice to alert teammates -- that he couldn't imagine playing without being able to hear. "I think it would be difficult," he said. The game between the teams came about after the Rangers Oakville Rangers began looking for a way to con- coach Dave Rogers tribute to their community. "Our coach has a philosophy about giving back," said parent Frances Bingham. "We get a lot of support through sponsorship. We wanted to do something meaningful and we started looking at ways we could use hockey to give back." Bingham contacted E.C. Drury and, when she found out that they had a ball hockey team, she thought it would be a perfect fit. E.C. Drury runs sports programs for its students, many of them in its residential program where students attend and live at the school during the week due to the distance from their homes. There are approxi- mately 80 students from as far as Windsor, Ottawa and Sudbury in the program, ranging in age from six to 20. Drury competes against other schools for deaf students from around the province in volleyball, ball hockey and swimming. The Rangers, with the help of sponsors Corbett's Source for Sports and IPSOS-ASI, raised money to donate to the school, which it will use to replace equipment for its elementary school-aged ball hockey players. The Rangers also bought a table hockey game for the school. "It was very nice of them -- just to get that recognition and that they were willing to do this for us," Couture said. "And everyone had a good time." "We just thought this was a great opportunity," Rogers added. "Sometimes it's tough for the kids to relate (when making a donation), but coming here and playing with these kids, I think it really helps. They're not only contributing, but they're learning some good life skills." That was apparent as the Rangers' Daniel Bingham and Drury's Dupuis huddled to plot strategy during a game of dodgeball. "It's really not that tough," Bingham said of communicating with his new teammate. "You have to speak a little slower so they can read your lips and talk with your hands more." "It helps that I can talk a little," Dupuis added. When the third ball hockey game of the evening wrapped up, the Rangers players compared notes on the sign language they had learned. That could be useful, seeing as though the players were already talking about coming back for another game in the spring.
