www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 26, 2007 - 49 Well-known Brampton philanthropist honoured by local artist A legacy is living on thanks to Oakville's Diane Young. The local artist honoured Maxwell C. Rice by creating a bust sculpture of the developer and philanthropist, unveiled recently at the Brampton Civic Hospital. The bronze bust stands on a granite pedestal in the Maxwell C. Rice lobby of the recently built Brampton Civic Hospital. Maxwell, who passed away last year, was a well-known and well-respected philanthropist in Brampton, along with his wife, Lois. The pair worked in the Brampton development business for more than 50 years, and gave generously to the Brampton and Area Community Foundation, the local hospital, and numerous arts organizations. Young, a native of Winnipeg, was commissioned to create the bust of Maxwell for the hospital. Her mandate as an artist is to raise awareness for the joy of seeing someone who is loved and respected honoured in perpetuity through sculpture. Young studied fine arts at the University of Manitoba. She has always loved art, but it wasn't until she started to work with clay that she found her true passion. An eclectic artist served as her mentor, and told her exciting stories of the world of art, which encouraged her to sculpt. "The day I tried my hand at sculpting I became instantly enthralled and knew that I had found my passion in life," Young writes on her website. She has shown her work in various art shows and galleries and has sculpted more than two dozen portrait commissions to date. Young had a six-week, solo show of her work at the Peel Heritage Gallery GEORGE BESHIRI / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER ARTISTIC TRIBUTE: Maxwell Rice's wife, Lois, left, and Oakville artist Diane Young at the unveiling of the bronze bust Young created of Maxwell, a philanthropist and developer. The bust was unveiled in the entrance of the new Brampton Civic Hospital. in Brampton. As a world traveler, Young has seen incredible legacies crafted in marble and bronze. With the encouragement from her mentor, she decided Canada needed to start honouring its own loved and respected citizens through bronze sculptures. Formerly with Air Canada, Young created an original sculpture of a 1970s airline stewardess for the Canadian Maple Wings Association. Each year, one of the castings is auctioned off as a fundraiser for her favourite charity. Young also recently completed a sculpted tribute to Mississauga's longtime Mayor, Hazel McCallion. This life-sized work is awaiting the go ahead for bronzing. The commission has the full blessing of McCallion. Young worked from more than 100 photos and measurements of Mayor McCallion to make sure she captured the true legacy for the official statue of Hurricane Hazel. Young has completed many commissioned works and has sold castings of a number of her pieces. When asked who she would like to see captured next in clay and bronze, she smiled and suggested that there are many Canadians who should leave a legacy. Young is currently working with several of them to make this happen. " I am proud of my innate ability to execute portraiture in the uniqueness of the three dimensional form," she said. "I work easily from photographs but enjoy the experience of getting to know my subjects if at all possible."
