The cupcakes are mighty at Oakwood Public School. A sale put on by the 19 students in Debbie Marinangelli's Grade 5 class put some sweets in the bellies of their schoolmates and some nourishment into their fellow citizens who rely on the food bank at the Kerr Street Market. The bake sale raised $66, which goes a long way toward buying basic grocery items such as skim milk powder, oil, baby food and pasta. However, the dollars donated by Oakwood School's students went further than most donations. In other words, the buck did- n't stop at the front door of the 484 Kerr St. food bank. To get an inside look at all the effort it takes to make a food bank tick, volunteer John Raynor, who is the market store manager, gave the Oakwood students a behind-the-scenes tour recently. "It's good for the kids to learn to give back to the community. They'll be adults one day," said Marinangelli. "The tour was quite an eye-opener for them." Still, this was only half the lesson in good citizenship. After the tour, the Oakwood School crew went on a shopping trip to the local grocery store to buy food with the money they raised.
