www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday December 22, 2007 - 5 Salvation Army Church is friendly to all, not stuffy and old style Cops help with toy drive Halton Regional Police is once again coming to the aid of those in need by supporting the Salvation Army in its Christmas Toy Drive. Halton residents who wish to make the Christmas season a little more enjoyable for those without means to celebrate it can drop gifts of new, unwrapped toys and clothing at the police station located at 1151 Bronte Rd. or 1229 White Oaks Blvd. This year there is a real need for gifts for teenagers so gift cards and gift certificates are greatly encouraged. The Salvation Army is active all year helping those who are disadvantaged and in need of a helping hand. Continued from page 4 "We thought we'd be moved further east, but we're pleased to be here," said Deborah, who earned the rank of major two years ago and jokes that Stan, who earned the same rank last June, is a junior major. The distance from home is an adventure for the Higdons, but a challenge for their children, admitted Deborah. Challenging the Higdons is the Oakville Salvation Army Church ranks, which number only about 50 members. While the couple ministers to the congregation, the Higdons are also working to boost its numbers. When not in the pulpit, Stan "You must meet the physical needs of people before you can minister to their spiritual needs." Deborah Higdon, pastor Oakville Salvation Army oversees Family Services programs, including the local shelter, while Deborah looks after Youth, Women's and Seniors ministries. According to the Higdons, it's important to get the word out that the Salvation Army Church is not stuffy or old-style, but rather friendly. That message is key to building the congregation numbers, they said. When not at work at the church, Stan can be found tinkering with cars or building things. Deborah likes to decorate. For the couple, who hope to retire in another decade, plans are already afoot. The Higdons are already building their Cape Cod retirement home on a property in Newfoundland. In the meantime however, helping people get to a comfort level at which they can absorb religion is what the Salvation Army is about at heart. "You must meet the physical needs of people before you can minister to their spiritual needs," said Deborah. VISIT US ONLINE New Patients Welcome! The real gift is the time you'll spend together.
